The following is a summary of a design project meant to enhance the current museum experience at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum; focused on improving community involvement through collaboration between the museum and its patrons, as well as increasing interest in the exhibits by facilitating evolving content.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1740361/Museum-gallery_640.png" width="640" height="430" width_o="2048" height_o="1376" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1740361/Museum-gallery_o.png" data-mid="10397815"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1740361/Museum-gallery-text_640.png" width="640" height="430" width_o="2048" height_o="1376" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1740361/Museum-gallery-text_o.png" data-mid="10397785"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1740361/Toy-story_640.png" width="640" height="430" width_o="2048" height_o="1376" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1740361/Toy-story_o.png" data-mid="10397825"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Three things need to be promoted in order for both locals and tourists to feel engaged by the content and empowered by the opportunities available.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1740361/3-goals_640.png" width="640" height="199" width_o="2048" height_o="638" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1740361/3-goals_o.png" data-mid="10397667"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Design Challenge
Content provided at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum is not relevant or engaging in meaningful ways to audiences, resulting in declining attendance over the past years. By finding appropriate methods of engagement that allow for curiosity, interaction, and participation we can improve the museum experience and its content.

Introducing Hong Kong Heritage
A platform for citizens and visitors to preserve and learn about Hong Kong heritage through a participatory and collaborative method aimed at discovering what its citizens’ truly believe represents its heritage. Through multiple tools such as Smartphone apps, a website, and an installation at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, users will be able to upload and share “items, or sites” of particular importance or relevance to HK heritage. Other members in the community of users will be able to comment, like/dislike, etc in order to help curate the content and build up a visual and narrative archive of Hong Kong’s heritage.

Experience Ecosystem
Connect the old and new together with technology and real-life locations. All three of these tools - the website, smartphone app, and installation - work together providing content to one another that enhances the overall experience. Challenges are posted by the museum to the website and smartphone to encourage users to start a debate, or learn more - and the content they provide feeds directly into the installation back at the Heritage Museum in real time.

		<description>The objective of this project was to take the manual sphygmomanometer (blood pressure monitor) and make it a more friendly and integrated user system. Working on my final sketches my concept began evolving into an active-wear athletic cuff that would be comfortable to wear. It has visual cues to help the user and a simple hand-held monitor that houses the air pump and release as well.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1583508/sketches_640.jpg" width="640" height="415" width_o="2048" height_o="1329" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1583508/sketches_o.jpg" data-mid="7762172"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The final renders of the product were created using Solidworks 8.0 3-d modeling system. The form and aesthetics are modeled off of sports equipment to give it a more youthful, rugged feel and less medical.

Our goal was to develop an e-Learning program that creates a positive student centric learning experience that enhances both collaboration and the interactions between teachers and students, in and out of the classroom.

Collaborating with the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and a local primary school we spent four months on research and design targeted towards collaboration, learning, communication, and technology use in educational environments for young kids studying in Hong Kong Primary schools.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1348932/dots_640.png" width="640" height="5" width_o="1270" height_o="9" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1348932/dots_o.png" data-mid="10398629"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Below is our Interaction model, it is an overview of relationships and activities between teachers and students while using our YODEL. This example scenario demonstrates how teachers collaborate and students work and learn together, using YODEL.

To help support usability we wanted to provide a platform that could be easily understood. This diagram demonstrates the organization of YODEL and how all the various functions and features are supported and connected through the three main topics: subject, connect, review.

		<description>Worked together on a multi-disciplinary team to try and answer the question "How to change the concept of fitness for Hong Kong women, from slim to fit?"

Our process was conducting ethnographic research to help the team: understand the needs, wants, and desires of Hong Kong women as it relates to slim and fit, health and beauty, and help determine future vision and direction.

Sprout - Hong Kong Polytechnic University &#38; Queensland University of Technology

The design brief asked for us to develop a future library proposal for the Howard Smith Wharves site in Brisbane, Australia. In collaboration with a team of two architecture students from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, we developed a proposal for our concept library.

Libraries are no longer quiet reading centers, but sites that foster community activities and educational programs, among others. Instead of a passive library, we need an active one. To make the site into an attractive gathering place we decided to focus on a topic we feel is a universal language. Food. Health and obesity are major global concerns and proper nutrition education is lacking in many places. By offering a “library” that isn’t focused so much on books, but instead the idea of knowledge, we can create a place that tackles real problems and offers substantial information, education and insights for the community. Call it another variation of the Specialty library - instead of just Law or Medicine - we provide resources on food. We call our library, Sprout.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1480746/dots_640.png" width="640" height="5" width_o="1270" height_o="9" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1480746/dots_o.png" data-mid="10399975"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The image below is a visualization of the various services and their connections to Sprout and our three core offerings of the Community Kitchen, Database, and Community Garden.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1480746/info arch.jpg" width="640" height="669" width_o="2048" height_o="2141" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1480746/info arch_o.jpg" data-mid="7555221"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1480746/dots_640.png" width="640" height="5" width_o="1270" height_o="9" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1480746/dots_o.png" data-mid="10399975"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Here I have included a diagram depicting the relationships and experience of an individual with Sprout, the community, and key services provided.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1480746/info arch 1.jpg" width="640" height="628" width_o="2048" height_o="2010" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1480746/info arch 1_o.jpg" data-mid="7555177"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1480746/dots_640.png" width="640" height="5" width_o="1270" height_o="9" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1480746/dots_o.png" data-mid="10399975"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Below are explorations on what the library space would look like. The goal is to let these spaces speak as a natural evolution of the activities offered. Starting with a restaurant on the roof where you can enjoy the food, you can venture down a level to learn more in the food database, then down again to prepare and cook in the kitchen, and finally grow your own plants in the garden on the ground floor.

		<description>The Nautilus Bench reflects nature, and the continual growth and beauty you can find there. The seat can be expanded from a one person seat to a two person bench by simply rotating and exchanging pieces. Its form is derived from the nautilus shell which lines and shape reflect its grace, beauty, and growth.

Material Constraints - One sheet of 4’ x 8’ x 1” plywood to be used to form a functional piece of furniture that requires no glue and no hardware. Materials may be added later to increase functionality, support, and comfort.
Aesthetics - should not detract from usability but rather encourage use.
Usability - allows for both sitting and standing room.
Minimize Product Footprint - collapse and expand for use, flat-pack for shipping/storage.
Consider Product’s Life Cycle - pieces that become broken or damaged can be replaced by sending back to manufacturer. Manufacturer can re-use or recycle damaged piece.
Allow user to customize - put piece together themselves, change arrangement, purchase interchangeable design options that can be traded in at the manufacturer.&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1000391/bench render.jpg" width="640" height="388" width_o="2048" height_o="1243" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/80645/1000391/bench render_o.jpg" data-mid="6522329" border="0" align="left"/&#62;</description>

A six week embedded interaction workshop focusing on interactive environments design hosted by architect Michael Fox, author of the book Interactive Architecture. The brief was to explore the new skills of contemporary social interactions and develop means to bring these new methods out of the computer and into the real physical world which we inhabit.

Our team was inspired by the idea of creating a unique and memorable experience for people to stumble upon in a public space. In Hong Kong, citizens too often go from place to place, without noticing what is around them or straying from their everyday comforts. We hoped to create a moment of serendipity and public playfulness, and thus the idea of Flux was born.

The Flux concept comprises of two physical interactive portals that exist in different places on campus. The portals are screens that display alternating video streams of each other's location. The blocks invite people on each side to discover and play with the portal, as they can be physically pushed in or pulled out, and thereby affecting the video streams. The goal of Flux is to invite a sense of curiosity and enjoyment through the juxtaposition of here and there.

5 Arduino's, 2 projectors, 10 servo motors, and 2 webcams work together to create this prototype -
a demonstration of the interactions we wanted to enable. Arduino's were connected to a central computer which processed the signal from each switch and subsequently controlled the movement of each servo motor and live video feed. This prototype was 1/3 scale and slightly different materials and technology would be used for a production ready exhibit. Below you can find the blog chronicling the 5 weeks we spent from concept to sketching to prototyping to model.

Educating kids about sleep and its importance through fun, interactive games that spark their imagination, creativity, and awareness.

Kids are sleeping less and less nowadays and it all starts with bad habits that form early. Education and emphasis on the real importance of sleep is sorely lacking and is the problem I will address with this project. We sleep 1/3 of our life, our sleep is responsible for making us healthier, smarter, stronger, and more efficient when we are awake. To help curb children’s bad habits I have developed an interactive exhibit to educate the youth about sleep’s importance.
